WILLOW TREES

Part 1: Natural Rooting Hormones

A few years ago my father gifted us Pussy Willow tree. We planted it on the corner of the house, not realizing how large it would really get. We prune it every year, which gives beautiful Spring/Easter decorations for us and to sell! Win, win!

Come to find out, willow trees are more than just beautiful!

John read that they contain natural rooting hormones. Many of you may have used powdered rooting hormones in the past, as we have. But having a natural alternative is just up our alley.

The process was actually very simple:

1. Cut up scrap branches into pieces small enough to fit into a jar.

2. Pour boiling water over cut up branches to fill the jar.

3. Allow mixture to sit and steep for at least 48 hours.

4. Strain out branches and store in the same jar at room temperature.

Use to water young seedlings to encourage root growth or place cuttings directly in the water for a few minutes before putting them into dirt or perlite. Finally, for cuttings that root in water, add a tbsp to the water to encourage root development

This will be our first year using it instead of the store bought hormone which typically runs anywhere from $7-$10 per ounce. We are excited to see the results and will keep everyone updated.

Stay tuned for Part 2: Natural Aspirin!
