Rehydrating Sourdough Powder

Materials needed:

  • Wide Mouth Jar w/breathable lid    * Unbleached Flour (white or wheat)
  • Kitchen Scale                       * Filtered Water
  • 15g (grams) sourdough powder       * Patience J

Instructions:

Step 1 – Pour 15g of sourdough powder to wide mouth jar. Add 15g of unbleached flour and 30g of warm filtered water and mix well. Place breathable lid on jar and set in warm area. I also place a rubber band around the jar at the level of the mixture. This allows me to see how much it grows.

Step 2 – Once the mixture has at least doubled in size, feed it a second time. Remove all but 30g of starter, then add 30g each of flour and warm filtered water. Stir, move the rubber band and put the lid back on and set in warm area to rise.

Step 3 – Once the mixture has doubled or tripled in size, repeat step 2. You should be seeing bubbles in the mixture at this point.

Notes:

  • You should be able to bake your first loaf after 3 feedings if the mixture has doubled or more in size with each feeding.
  • The temperature in your home will affect how long it takes for your starter to double in size. I personally keep mine on top of the fridge or in the microwave and mine typically doubles within 6 hours.
  • You may also use the sourdough discard after 3 feeding/doublings. See our Facebook page for some yummy recipes and ideas on how to use your discard.
  • Above all, patience is key when it comes to sourdough! Because it naturally ferments (as opposed to using yeast) it will take longer to rise but it is so worth it!
  • Good luck and please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions!
