Every year, I look forward to early August when I typically prepare a big batch of fire cider, a spicy and pungent herbal tonic that helps support the immune system during the cold winter months. This year, life got a bit hectic and I’m starting about two weeks later than usual, but I know this powerful concoction will still be ready in time to keep my family healthy and thriving as the days grow shorter and cooler.
A Brief History of Fire Cider
Fire cider has its roots in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in the teachings of renowned herbalist Rosemary Gladstar. In the 1970s, Gladstar began teaching about a spicy, vinegar-based tonic that she named “Fire Cider” due to its intense, warming properties. The original recipe included garlic, onion, horseradish, ginger, and cayenne pepper, all steeped in apple cider vinegar.Over the years, many herbalists have adapted the recipe to include additional immune-boosting and circulation-stimulating ingredients like turmeric, citrus, and herbs. The basic principle remains the same: infuse potent, pungent herbs in vinegar to extract their beneficial compounds, resulting in a tonic that can be taken daily throughout the winter to support overall health.
The Medicinal Benefits of Fire Cider
The ingredients in fire cider work synergistically to provide a range of health benefits:
- Immune Support: Many of the ingredients, such as garlic, ginger, onion, and cayenne, have antimicrobial and immune-stimulating properties that can help ward off colds and flu.
- Circulation Boost: The spicy, pungent ingredients like ginger, horseradish, and cayenne help to stimulate circulation, which can be beneficial for maintaining warmth in the winter months.
- Digestive Aid: The combination of ginger, garlic, and onion supports healthy digestion and can help alleviate symptoms of indigestion or sluggish digestion.
- Respiratory Health: The pungent, spicy ingredients can help to break up mucus and congestion in the respiratory tract, making fire cider a useful tonic for those prone to colds or allergies.
- Anti-Inflammatory Effects: Many of the ingredients, particularly turmeric and ginger, have potent anti-inflammatory compounds that can help to reduce inflammation throughout the body.

- 2-3 sprigs fresh bee balm
- ½ tsp whole black peppercorns

Instructions:
- Place all ingredients except the vinegar in a half gallon-sized glass jar.
- Pour the apple cider vinegar over the ingredients until they are fully submerged. Leave about a ½ inch of space at the top of the jar.
- Close the jar tightly and shake well to combine all ingredients.
- Store the jar in a cool, dark place for 4-6 weeks, shaking daily.
- After 4-6 weeks, strain out the solids using a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth, pressing down to extract as much liquid as possible. Discard the solids. (Or you can dehydrate and make a flavorful powder)
- Pour the liquid into a clean glass jar or bottle. You can add honey to taste if desired for a sweeter, milder flavor. We add local organic honey.
- Store in the refrigerator and take 1-2 tablespoons daily throughout the winter months to support immune health and overall vitality.
