This year, we added an exciting new tool to our home apothecary: the Capsule IT system from Herb Affair. Rebecca suffers from the occasional really bad headaches, and we’ve found that feverfew and willow bark are incredibly helpful in keeping them at bay. However, she is not always a fan of the taste of herbal tinctures or teas. That’s why we decided to start making our own capsules, providing a convenient and tasteless way for her to take these beneficial herbs. Additionally, we wanted to create a daily supplement to strengthen our immune systems and provide some anti-cancer properties.
The Process: Powdering Herbs and Filling Capsules
To begin, we powdered some of our homegrown herbs using a coffee grinder that we’ve dedicated solely to herbal preparations. This ensures that our herbs remain pure and uncontaminated by coffee flavors. Once our herbs were finely ground, we were ready to test out the Capsule IT system.
We were pleasantly surprised by how easy the encapsulation process was. Aside from the occasional capsule part shooting out of our hands (a minor learning curve!), the Capsule IT system couldn’t be simpler to use. By following the well-written instructions in the manual, we were able to fill 100 capsules with our powdered feverfew in less than 10 minutes. The system itself is well-made and sturdy, giving us confidence that it will last through many batches of herbal capsules.

Our First Capsule Creations
For our inaugural use of the Capsule IT system, we made two different types of capsules:
1. Feverfew Capsules: These capsules contain pure, powdered feverfew, which I use as a natural alternative to ibuprofen for headache relief. Feverfew has been shown to help prevent and reduce the severity of migraines and headaches.
2. Daily Immune & Anti-Cancer Supplement: For this blend, we combined powdered dandelion root, dandelion leaves, wild violets, nasturtium, purslane, lamb’s quarter, oregano, and blueberry leaves – all herbs we grew ourselves. This potent combination offers a range of benefits:
– Dandelion root and leaves are rich in antioxidants and support liver health and digestion.
– Nasturtium is high in vitamin C and has antibacterial effects.
– Wild violets have anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties.
– Purslane is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants.
– Lamb’s quarter is packed with vitamins A and C, as well as minerals like iron and calcium.
– Oregano has powerful antimicrobial and antioxidant properties.
– Blueberry leaves are rich in antioxidants and have been studied for their potential anti-cancer effects.
The Benefits of DIY Herbal Capsules
Making our own herbal capsules has been a game-changer for us. Not only can we tailor our herbal blends to our specific needs, but we also have the peace of mind of knowing exactly what’s going into our supplements. Plus, capsules offer a quick and convenient way to take herbs on the go, without the need to brew a tea or measure out a tincture.
If you’re interested in taking your herbal medicine to the next level, we highly recommend looking into making your own capsules. With a tool like the Capsule IT system, the process is simple, fast, and empowering. By creating your own herbal capsules, you can take control of your health and well-being in a whole new way.
Happy encapsulating!
